During the Cold War, the United States deployed a vast arsenal of nuclear missiles across the Great Plains. Approximately 1,000 missiles were hidden in plain sight, armed and ready to strike targets in the Soviet Union in 30 minutes or less. “Beneath the Plains” explores this perilous era when fear of nuclear apocalypse permeated world politics and culture, and the world’s superpowers pursued a strategy of “Mutually Assured Destruction.”
