On Dec. 8, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden commented on the passing of John Glenn. Glenn, the former U. S. Senator and astronaut became the first American to orbit the Earth, when as one of NASA’s original Mercury 7 astronauts, he flew aboard Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962. The riveting flight united our nation, launched America to the forefront of the space race race and secured for him a unique place in the annals of history.
